Overall Impressions : We have had this for a few months now, and overall this adjustable stand has exceeded our expectations with its flexibility and build-quality.
Competition :
* I chose this over some of the other similar products (Pwr+ themselves have a few others) because this one has the deepest "lip" which prevents my 15.6" laptop from sliding down. The lip is around 3/4". I think the other ones may be ok if you have a thinner ultrabook or netbook though.
Original Intended Use: To convert a regular desk to a standing desk. It works splendidly in this mode. The maximum height I have been able to extend this (to raise our 15.6" laptop) is about 20" from the base to the base of the laptop. Note that in this position, it is a bit unstable on its own, but is stable with the laptop on it with the weight of the laptop counter balancing the forward tilt.
Other uses :
1) In Bed : We have found that this is quite useful when sitting up on a bed;
2) a Chair or sofa : it is also possible to use it on a sofa, but your options are going to be limited by the depth of the sofa - I am 5'7" average build and I find one of our 22" deep sofas just deep enough for it to use. I have found most of our recliners are not wide enough to use this.
Build Quality: The arms are probably aluminium or an aluminium-allow. The joints are plastic. They have held up well so far, although in two of the joints the aluminiium leg seems to be loosening slightly from the joint - not enough to make me concerned yet. I would feel much better if they found a way to make the joints metal as well. We have been using this with 2 15.6" laptops (about 5 lbs) for about 4-5 hrs every weekday and more on weekends.
